On the disinvitation of Chefket (and cancel culture in general )
Berliner Zeitung, report by khe, 1 October 2025: »The debate surrounding the cancellation of a concert by rapper Chefket at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) continues. PEN Berlin has now also criticised the disinvitation. Addressing the HKW, PEN Berlin asks about the ‘open dialogue’ the institution claims to stand for. According to the statement, an opportunity was missed to enter into dialogue with the rapper and his views on the war in the Middle East.« The Berliner Zeitung published our press release in full. Spiegel, feature report by Alina Herbing, 30 September 2025: »PEN Berlin deliberately refrained from organising buses to bring people to the rally. They did not want to overwhelm Klütz, but to enter into conversation, explains Thea Dorn. Nor did anyone from PEN Berlin call on the volunteer mayor to resign. ‘We want to understand how this incident came about,’ says Thea Dorn. ‘We have great respect for people who engage in voluntary political work here and elsewhere. We ourselves are a volunteer-based organisation. We know what it means to work on a voluntary basis.’« LINK
dpa, report by Iris Leithold, carried by, among others, the Frankfurter Allgemeine, 29 September 2025: »Following the controversial disinvitation of Michel Friedman from the Hannah Arendt Week 2026 in Klütz, around 500 people took part, according to police, in a rally and discussion with the public intellectual on the market square of the small town in north-west Mecklenburg. The writers’ association PEN Berlin had issued the invitation. Michel Friedman made clear his lack of understanding that a mayor would interfere in the programme planning of a literary institution. ‘I thought those times were over,’ he said.« LINK
Süddeutsche Zeitung, feature report by Ulrike Nimz, 30 September 2025: »‘We are not a UFO landing here; we are an offer to the people of Klütz,’ says Deniz Yücel. And before things become too cosy: ‘We would have held this rally even if the entire village had been against it.’ Anyone who has ever stood on market squares in eastern Germany when people from Berlin arrive to debate democracy knows how that can turn out. Angela Merkel, Olaf Scholz, Annalena Baerbock—all of them have been shouted at amid whistles and insults. In Klütz, there is also something else: solidarity. ‘Anyone who is afraid is already in the process of leaving the path of democracy,’ warns a mayor from the region. Another thinks an apology to Mr Friedman would be appropriate. Freedom of expression, most agree, must not apply only to one’s own views.« LINK

The other just shakes his head. Many residents of Klütz nevertheless appear curious. According to police, more than 400 people have come. Neue Zürcher Zeitung, feature report by Nathan Giwerzew, 30 September 2025: »Michel Friedman smiles as he steps onto the stage in the Mecklenburg town of Klütz, population 3,000. He says he was told he did not belong here, the 69-year-old Jewish public intellectual remarks on the market square between brick and half-timbered houses. The first boos begin—then he adds: ‘I think we fit together very well.’ For a moment, Friedman succeeds in captivating his audience. Around a thousand residents of Klütz will remain in the cold for another two hours to debate with Friedman what weighs on their minds.« LINK

A feast for social and political scientists. Many now want to speak, pluck up the courage. (…) Not everything said on Monday was kind. Some of it was even ugly. But there was struggle, dispute. September 2025: »Der Bürgermeister von Klütz, Jürgen Mevius tritt zurück – nach harter Kritik an der Absage eines Auftritts des Publizisten Michel Friedman im Literaturhaus der Stadt.
